Sailing vacation guide. Why shall one try sailing?
The Romans had one saying which means "It is not important to live, it is important to sail."
The sense of freedom one gets during a cruise cannot be compared to anything else on this earth.
Everybody has different worldview, different aims, ideals, principles.
I have heard a few times in my life people making derogatory statements about sailing, to say: "What is so special about going on a thing whose floor is moving, which is only a couple of square metres, which is dangerous and after all there are so much faster and safer ways of transport?"
Yes, I know such people, and I don't want to persuade them into anything, all I tell them is "Well, I am very sorry for you, because you miss a lot."
Let everyone speak for themselves, so now I will say why sailing is my favourite sport, why to choose sailing among other ways of spending your holiday, and why sailing is actually a lifestyle, a thing that dominates your development as a person.
Just imagine yourself on a yacht, the rising sun and its path on the sea, the fresh cool air of the morning, the drops of dew on the sails, the flying gulls constantly chirping... It may sound trivial or even clichéd, but once you have experienced it, you will be able to confirm that there is nothing like it.
A friend of mine passed with a 6-m long yacht all the way from the Black Sea to one tiny Caribbean island and then he wrote a book. He named it "The Feeling of Freedom" - and this is the quintessence of sailing: you feel free, because you are not attached to anything; you float as if in the middle of the Universe, you speak with nature directly, with God Himself, with Space and stars... You are creator of your own destiny, and you feel very strongly the responsibility you have for your life (and the lives of those aboard) because mistakes at sea can cost very dear.
At land, can you easily find a place where when you turn at 360o you'll see no-one, nothing made of human hand - only pure Nature? When the vessel "flies" above the waves at a high speed, you feel like a tiny particle of something far greater than our human senses can grasp. In other cases, when there is no wind and you don't move as fast and prompt decisions are not , you have enough time to reflect on the important things in life, and again the minute topics of everyday life seem so distant. You learn how to sieve the significant from insignificant...
Sailing completely overlaps with the notion of "active rest". You have to be very active at sea - many people think that you will have so much time lingering on the deck, but this is not the case (unless you have hired a crew to do all the stuff on the boat). Performing all the necessary activities is a lot of work! At the same time you rest, because as clever people have said, the best rest is when your brain delves into a completely different type of activity.
Here I should clarify something which many people misunderstand, when they think about sailing - there are two very distinct activities - one is to be a tourist on a yacht, or ship (thus you can indulge into thoughts, self-reflection, even writing poetry, enjoying sunsets and sunrises, the nature, etc). The other activity is when you are responsible for some (or all) of the functions that need to be performed in order for the yacht to move properly. During regattas, every member of the crew has special role; during sailing for pleasure, usually the person who's on shift is responsible for most of the things.
I have tried both of these roles, and they both have charm; but frankly, the second, when you realize that the others depend on you, is more rewarding.
In this way sailing teaches you of self-discipline. It is a wide channel where knowledge about the world we live in go inside your whole personality.
Through the years, for all the history of civilization, sailing proved to be one of the best way to check how tough you are and whether you are bold and courageous in reality.
The best times are sunrises and sunsets... and one with other is never alike!
Words, these written symbols of concepts which we have in our minds about different things, are so weak and insignificant in comparison with the real adventure, the real fun, the real experience. so I wonder what are you doing here still reading - set sails!
